Looking at the median mutual fund FFI by category (globefund.com) gives investors a sense for how much mutual fund companies take as a percentage of gross return. Investors take all the risk and fundcos take generally over 25% of the return for the major categories (10 year returns). New Jersey casino slot machines can't take more than 14% by law and usually take something closer to 4%. I know it's not the same thing except for one thing. the casinos and fund companies are the only ones who a guaranteed to make money. I think Carrick's not so secret message is "don't buy mutual funds".
